Jayne Townsend is Head of Art and Design at Hope Valley College in Derbyshire. She lives in Buxton with her husband and two young children.
Jayne has been a teacher of Art and Design since 1982, and a musician also, but has maintained her own art practice throughout.
Having spent many years experimenting with painting, printing and photography, she has now developed a passion for textiles and ceramics.
Her latest works are batik designs with very detailed and intricate embroidery detail, all stitched by hand.
Artists such as Hundertwasser, Picasso, Klimt, Niki Saint de Phalle and folk art from various cultures inspire her designs, and her travels around Turkey.
Each piece of batik embroidery takes many hours to complete and is embellished with a great deal of beadwork.
Jayne’s ceramic work is mostly based on tiles rather than three-dimensional structures; these tiles could be described as illustrations in clay. She uses white earthenware clay with oxides and underglaze decoration, often with areas of gold lustre applied. Jayne’s ceramic work has been greatly inspired by working with Caroline Chouler-Tissier.
A range of Jayne’s work can be seen at her website, www.jayne-townsend.org.uk
